This is Karen from Knitting for Brisbane's Needy. It was lovely meeting you and Margaret when I was in Melbourne in March.

I started Knitting for Brisbanes Needy in January 2006. Like yourself I found that I had knitted more than enough items for family and friends, so had basically stopped knitting. But a chance meeting with a lady who volunteered with a not for profit organisation who helped the less fortunate, made me take up my knitting needles again. She told me that they were desperate for warm things for the needy, especially in winter. I told her I could knit some beanies, scarves, etc and from there a couple of friends joined me and it has just got bigger and bigger since.

It is amazing how many not for proft organisation there are, who get no or little funding, who are out there quietly going about their own business of helping the less fortunate.

Thank you and your members for helping us help out the Mater Mothers Maternity Unit, with your donations of 206 newborn beanies. The lady who is the manager of this unit is so grateful for all the beanies we have donated, along with your donation too. They use in excess of 8000 beanies per year on new born babies, to help them keep their own body heat, so that they don't have to be separated from their mummies.

All the organisations we help are very appreciative, and the less fortunate who receive our donations are even more grateful!

Hoping that between us all, we can make a very big difference in the lives of those who are "doing it tough" for whatever reason.
